"Exquisite Pair Of Meiji Period Kutani Footed Jars, Japan "
We are pleased to present a pair of 19th-century Kutani porcelain footed jars with lids, a remarkable example of traditional Japanese craftsmanship from the Meiji period. These antique jars showcase the refined artistry and exceptional detail that have made Kutani ware a highly prized collectible worldwide.
These stunning jars are distinguished by their intricate enamel work with a rich color palette dominated by red and gold, a signature of classic Meiji-era Kutani porcelain. The detailed hand-painted scenes reflect the depth of traditional Japanese artistry:
Front Panels: Feature meticulously illustrated peacocks amidst a backdrop of blooming chrysanthemums and other seasonal flowers, symbolizing beauty and longevity in Japanese culture.
Reverse Panels: Present an elegant depiction of geishas dressed in finely detailed kimonos, surrounded by intricate floral arrangements—an homage to grace and tradition.
The lids of these jars are adorned with sculptural figures of ‘komainu’ (lion-dogs), mythical guardians believed to ward off evil spirits. The ornate handles and legs boast exquisite relief designs in red and gold, enhancing the jars' majestic and ceremonial appearance.
A closer look reveals the exceptional craftsmanship, particularly in the realistic detailing of the women's faces and the feathers of the peacocks, showcasing the painstaking effort and superior skill of the artisan.
Each jar is signed on the base, confirming their authenticity and origin as genuine Kutani ware.
Kutani ware originated in Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture in 1655. After a period of halted production, it was revived during the Meiji era, coinciding with Japan’s opening to international trade. Renowned for its vivid designs and expert craftsmanship, Kutani porcelain quickly became a highly sought-after export, blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with elements designed to appeal to Western collectors.
Today, Kutani porcelain remains highly valued on the antique market, with increasing demand from collectors worldwide.
