Jaroslav Špillar was born into the family of a financial official, Antonín Špillar, and his wife, Františka. His younger brothers Karel Špillar and Rudolf Vojtěch Špillar were also visual artists. Jaroslav Špillar was one of the first students of the newly established School of Applied Arts in Prague. Here, in the years 1885-87, he studied with František Ženíšek and Jakub Schikaneder, and then for five years at the Academy of Fine Arts with Maxmilián Pirner. This was followed by a study stay in Italy and further trips abroad.
