Bedřich Havránek (Friedrich Hawranek; January 4, 1821, Prague-Nové Město – March 1, 1899, ibid.) was a Czech painter, illustrator and teacher. At the age of fifteen, he began studying landscape painting at the Prague Academy with Antonín Mánes. After his death, he continued his studies first with Christian Ruben and then with Max Haushofer. After completing his studies, he visited France, Poland, Switzerland, England, Bavaria, Austria and Germany. From 1840 he went to Munich, where he became acquainted with the works of Christian Morgenstern and Carl Rottmann. He lived in Prague as a bachelor without financial worries. Painting and graphics were among his hobbies, as was the exploration of foreign cultures. He was a popular companion and his paintings were sought after by collectors. He was one of the favourite illustrators of the books of the Austrian traveller and Archduke Ludwig Saviour of Tuscany, who was his pupil. From sketches sent to him by the Archduke from his travels, and later also from his own photographs, Havránek, F. Stolař and J. Jass produced woodcuts for at least three travelogues: The Caravan Journey from Egypt to Syria was published in German, English (1881), German (1879) and Czech (1885), Märchen aus Mallorce (1885),
