"Bell, Kutani, Japan, Meiji Era (1868-1912). "
Interesting Japanese hand-painted porcelain bell. The decoration shows dragons, formerly phoenixes, as well as floral and ornamental friezes. The Japanese phoenix - Hōō - is derived from the Chinese prototype - Fenghuang. It is a symbol of virtue and grace, its appearance announcing warmth - summer - as well as peaceful and happy times. The Japanese dragon Ryū is associated with the element of water and in paintings it often emerges from waves or clouds, a symbol of strength and wisdom. The couple of the dragon and the phoenix is often likened to a couple of empresses, the dragon representing the emperor and the phoenix the empress.
