Landscape with pandanus - Oil on hardboard - Signed Nicolai Michoutouchkine (1929-2010) Nicolaî dreams of islands and light from a young age. He studies art and takes drawing and painting classes in Paris. In 1953 he takes the road to the Orient, Greece, Turkey, the Middle East, Nepal, India then Australia and arrival in the Pacific zone. He opens the first art gallery in Noumea with Robert Tatin d'Avesnières in 1959. He meets a young Futunian, Aloï Pilioko, who becomes his traveling companion for life. They spent two years in Futuna before settling in Efate in the New Hebrides in 1961. For the rest of his life he travelled the Pacific and the rest of the world and accumulated a remarkable collection of Oceanic art, a large part of which is exhibited at the Pasifika Museum in Nusa Dua, Bali.
