"Francois Roffiaen: The Meuse Around Waulsort. Dated 1848"
Francois Roffiaen, born in Ypres in 1820, died in Ixelles in 1898, is a Belgian artist specializing in mountain landscapes. Trained at the Brussels Academy, he followed the teachings of Francois Bossuet and Pierre Louis Kuhnen, he traveled to the remarkable sites of Switzerland, Austria, Scotland, but also closer to him in Belgium to always paint as he himself says "from nature". Admiring the work of the Swiss painter André Calame, he came to meet him and work alongside him for several weeks. He exhibited in Antwerp and Ghent, then with success his career became international. His works were presented in, to name just a few places, Barcelona, Paris, Nice, Caracas London. His works were sold in the United States, and he interested crowned heads. The work we are presenting shows, as the author himself indicates, in accordance with his habits, the surroundings of the Meuse towards Waulsort, painted in 1848, a Belgian locality, where nature, river and hillsides, express their quiet splendor. He spices up his landscape with an interesting cargo boat with a very particular rudder. The scene is painted on a beautiful mahogany panel. The painting is, in accordance with his habits, signed in the paint, and countersigned on the back on a label where he dates and describes the places. Unframed, for the moment, in perfect condition.
