The Yoruba religion is based on artistic sculptures bearing coded messages (aroko). These spirits are supposed to play a role as intermediaries with the supreme god, Olodumare. Their finish is often satin. In the past, offering cups, used to store kola nuts or other gifts intended for visitors, were placed in the royal palaces of the Ekiti and Igbomina regions of Yoruba country.
