"Raymond Lafage 1656 - 1684 & Group Of Saints And Characters Of The Old Testament "
Raymond LAFAGE (Attributed to) pen drawing Group of saints and characters from the Old Testament We presented this work to the best specialist of the moment on Raymond Lafage, whom we thank for his work. Here is his opinion: "I know this drawing which was shown at the Galerie Jean-François Baroni in Paris in 1991, which had published an illustrated catalogue where this sheet appears at no. 21. Until now I have put this drawing in the "uncertain" in the classification of the Catalogue raisonné because it is certainly identical in composition to the north-eastern part of the drawing reproduced by Arvengas in 1965 (fig. 11) but with interesting differences: a repentance of the arms for the character at the top in the centre, the striated Tables of the Law, the addition of feet to the character who is scratching his head in the foreground... The saint who carries the cross has been moved to the top while he appears next to Moses on the large format Last Judgment. The size of the sheet is certainly the cause of this displacement. So was it a preliminary study by Lafage himself, an autograph copy or a later copy by a third party? I have spotted so many "doubles" (without these being copies of engravings) that there are There really is a mystery to be solved."
