Joseph Denovan Adam (1841–1896) was a Scottish painter renowned for his depictions of cattle, farm animals, and pastoral landscapes. Born in Glasgow, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art and became known for his naturalistic approach, influenced by the Barbizon School, which emphasized rural themes and atmospheric landscapes.
Adam had a particular talent for capturing the form and character of animals, especially cattle, with remarkable realism. His paintings often depicted the quiet dignity of rural life, focusing on the relationship between animals and their environment. His deep understanding of animal anatomy made his work highly regarded among collectors and fellow artists.
Beyond his painting career, Adam was also an educator. He established an art school at Craigmill, near Stirling, where he encouraged students to observe nature closely. His dedication to teaching and commitment to realism helped influence a new generation of Scottish artists.
His works are featured in several prominent collections, including the Kelvingrove Art Gallery.
