Object description :

"Ancient Ring With An Intaglio Of A Libation Offering. Roman, 1st/2nd Century Ad."
An Ancient silver ring set with a glass intaglio of a hero offering a libation to an altar.

Roman, 1st - 2nd century AD.

Ring Size I UK / 4.25 US / 48 EU.

The intaglio measures 1.3 x 1cm.

Weighs 6.1 grams.

The silver ring with flared shoulders is set with an engraved glass intaglio with the appearance of nicolo a form of hardstone, a popular material for engraved gems. The intaglio is engraved with a caped hero standing before an altar, an animal skull offering on top, his dog by his side. The intaglio has been damaged at some point, possibly in antiquity or during its historic excavation, it remains an honest and very wearable example of ancient Roman jewellery.

A ring set with a gem of a similar subject can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum - a Nicolo Intaglio ring, accession number; 1126-1864.
