Antique French painting from the first half of the 19th century. Oil on oak panel artwork of excellent pictorial quality depicting a Neoclassical subject entitled Amintas (Aminta), from the famous work by Torquato Tasso. A painting of good size characterized by warm and well-defined colors. Aminta, a young shepherd, falls in love, unrequited, with the beautiful mortal nymph Silvia. Even after saving her from the clutches of a satyr, the young girl abandons him without even saying goodbye. Aminta, desperate for having found a veil of the nymph stained with blood, attempts to take his own life. After various vicissitudes, the story ends with the crowning of the love between the two. Painting attributable to the French painter Philippe Jacques Van Brée (1784-1871), lacking additional documentation. Artwork that has undergone a light conservative restoration over time. The panel has small drops of color (see photo), structurally sound, solid and with a beautiful patina. Overall painting in good condition.
