"18th Italian School Sibyl Of Cumae After Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691-1765)"
"The Sibyl of Cumae prophesies the birth of Christ" from the original by Giovanni Paolo Panini, oil on canvas, 18th century. Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691-1765), a famous Italian landscape painter, also known as the master of the Grand Tour, is famous for his architectural capricci and his "views" of Rome, usually set among the ruins and antiquities of the eternal city. He often includes biblical scenes in his views, as in the case of the prophecy of the Cumaean Sibyl, which takes place inside a hovel next to which stands an ancient sarcophagus, while the characters are sitting on the ruins of old capitals. Panini's painting dates back to 1738, our painting, also from the 18th century, certainly belongs to a painter from his circle who painted it a few decades later. The fluid and fast painting testify to the skills of the painter, who was able to pay homage to the great master who preceded him.
The painting has its original canvas; It does not have pictorial reconstructions, color losses or restorations, only the chassis has been changed. In an 18th century Salvator Rosa frame. Very good state of preservation.
