At 314 meters long, it was the longest liner (passenger ship) ever built in the world throughout its period of activity until the launch in 2004 of the Queen Mary 2, 345 m (1,132 ft) long. It thus remained the largest liner in the world for 42 years, a record that still stands today. Its home port is Le Havre and it was put into service in January 1962, on behalf of the Compagnie générale transatlantique (CGT). For twelve years, he provided transatlantic crossings and a few cruises around the world, until September 1974.
