Born in Le Havre in 1846, Henri Louis Scott was a draughtsman, painter and landscape artist, theatre decorator and press illustrator. He studied with François de l'Herbe. He was an accomplished painter of landscapes and city views, as well as an illustrator and engraver. Many of his subjects capture the haunting beauty of the Normandy coast in the region of his native Le Havre. Scott began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1872 and won a medal there before being honoured at the 1883 Salon. His monumental painting, Les Funérailles de Gambetta, was acquired by the French state and is now in the collections of the Musée de Cahors.
