In the photograph, the crown of thorns is clearly visible on the pillow, as is the knot / armband.
Remembrance dioramas of this kind are exceedingly rare. A poignant testimony reinforced by the symbolic presence of this crown of thorns, symbolizing suffering and elevation, as in the story of Jesus.
André Louis Isnard (1816-1894) and his two sons Edouard Louis (1843-1906) and Philippe Auguste (1848-?) were photographers in Carpentras for over a quarter of a century, working together until their father's death, and then as a couple. André Louis Isnard was born in Carpentras in 1816. He worked as a painter-decorator, mirror-maker, house painter and wallpaper merchant. It is not known which of the three took up photography, which became an important part of the family business. In the 1886 census, André Louis was still listed as a wallpaper merchant, his eldest as a painter and Philippe as a photographer. For the first few years, the three men signed their prints “Isnard & Fils”. Then, after the father's death in 1894, they signed their prints “Isnard”. The Isnards were responsible for portraits, as well as numerous views of Carpentras and the Vaucluse region.
Condition: As can be seen from the photos, this frame has certainly suffered minor water damage or dampness concerns, as the cardboard shows halos. Fortunately, the most important elements of this post-mortem reliquary diorama are untouched, which suggests that the damage was minor.
