Portrait of a Stallion, 18th Century by William Williams (1727-1791) sells for $60,000 Large circa 1770 portrait of a racing stallion in an open landscape, oil on panel by William Williams. Early and important American racehorse portrait of the stallion in profile. William Williams was born in Bristol, England before moving to Philadelphia, marrying Mary Mare and settling in New York. The portrait dates from Williams’ active period in New York during the rise and popularity of thoroughbred racing that began in 1665. Inscribed on the reverse with HW6685 and independently authenticated.
