Object description :

"17th Century Monoxyl Sculpture - Polychrome And Gilded Virgin - Religious Bas Relief Dated 1673"
Panel representing the Virgin of Sorrows, South of France, Dated 1673.

Moving octagonal panel in walnut carved in bas-relief, polychromed and gilded, dating from the second half of the 17th century.
It represents the Virgin of Sorrows holding her dead Son on her knees, a sword piercing his heart in reference to the prophecy of Simeon.

The whole gives off a great dramatic intensity, accentuated by the expressiveness of the faces and the careful treatment of the draperies.
The date 1673 is inscribed on the upright of the cross, confirming its time of creation. This type of representation, characteristic of the religious art of the south of France, is part of a tradition of baroque piety aimed at arousing devotion.

Condition: Good general condition. Note: a missing finger on the left hand, and old restoration on the back on each side (see photos).

Dimensions:

- Height 66.3 cm.
- Width 61.4 cm.
- Depth 5 cm

A poignant testimony to 17th century sacred art, ideal for lovers of devotional objects and ancient sculpture.
