Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (1841-1920) (attributed to ): “A brawl at a masked ball”, oil on canvas 34 X 54 cm mounted in a slightly damaged black and gold molded frame 54 X 71 cm. Franco-Spanish school circa 1880, unsigned, to be compared with the painting in the Museum of Fine Arts in Havana and certain genre scenes from this period. A true snapshot, we understand that the man disguised as Pierrot has made overly advanced advances to a Lady who faints, held by her friends and whose husband defies the indelicate person who has left his hat there, dragged away in spite of himself by a friend inviting him to leave. If the characters are extremely individualized and detailed, the quasi-impressionist touch of the backgrounds lightens the scene by focusing attention on them. Only one looks at the viewer, which leads me to think that it could be a self-portrait in the painting. The great artist Madrazo comes from a family of painters who all achieved fame.
