Andre Herviault (1884-1969)

André Herviault studied with Fernand Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was sent to Togo by the Ministry of Colonies and brought back 18 works, which were exhibited at the Salon of the Société Coloniale des Artistes Français.
His painting of the Conca Marini coastline in Amalfi, from around 1923, is housed in the Musée d'Orsay.

He painted many representations of life in Africa during the colonial period, including "Scene of Daily Life in a Central African Village," which was shown at the 1931 Colonial International Exhibition. This work depicts primitive mud huts with thatched roofs, typical of Togo, surrounded by tropical vegetation.

A specialist in such representations and having made frequent trips to Africa, he received the Prix de l’Afrique-Équatoriale française and then the Prix de l’Afrique-Occidentale française. Several of his works, including The Topographer Officer, also shown at the Colonial Exhibition, were exhibited in 2018 at the Musée du Quai Branly as part of the "Paintings of the Distant Lands" exhibition.
