The little girl, standing, wears a light blue dress and a small bonnet of the same color. Near the water, a younger boy sails a small sailboat on the water of the pond. The woman is in white, the pram is pale yellow. All the characters stand behind a large statue in the middle of a pond, which holds the foreground. The background is composed of a curtain of vegetation in different shades of green.
The whole is fresh, serene, treated with a quick and broad, post-impressionist touch.
The work is signed and dated lower left. It is in very good condition. It is placed in a beautiful frame with corners decorated with flowers, probably contemporary with the painting. The frame is in good condition.
The artist
Louis-Victor Guirand de Scévola was a figure in French painting at the end of the 19th century and in the first third of the 20th century. Born in 1871 in Sète (South of France), he was sent to Paris at a very young age to continue his studies. After a brief career in industry, he decided to devote himself entirely to painting. He joined the École supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1889. He quickly blossomed in the symbolist vein, favoring the use of pastel and watercolor. He enjoyed success as a portrait painter and benefited from important solo exhibitions from 1903 in London, Buenos Aires and Paris. He abandoned the Salon des artistes français and exhibited more readily at the Salon des indépendants or the Salon d'automne. Having married an actress, he led a social life and became a fashionable painter.
Mobilized during the First World War, he was one of the inventors of military camouflage. He was awarded the Legion of Honour and the Croix de Guerre.
Returning to civilian life, he adopted a more classical style of painting and concentrated on portraits, landscapes and still lifes. He became president of the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1937. He died in Paris in 1950.
Several French museums, including the Musée d'Orsay, hold works by this artist. His works have also been the subject of numerous public sales.
