Henry Wilkinson & Co, Solid Silver Basket, 19th Century

Beautiful footed bowl with a folding handle with Louis XV style chiseled decoration composed of acanthus and volutes around the edge. The handle, slightly openwork, has a decoration of foliage and plants with a cartouche in its center where there is a family crest. This crest represents a forearm holding a dagger and could be linked to the Alexander family of Kent (see Fairbairn's Book of Crests, 1905, p.8).

Presence of four English hallmarks that are difficult to read, on the face of the basket and on the inside of the handle. These are probably: HW&C, mark of the silversmith Henry Wilkinson & Co who was active in Sheffield from 1830 to 1872; a lion passant; a profile of William IV (1836) and a “t” to the left of a crown (1839).
