Pair of Thepphanom in gilded bronze, very finely crafted. Early Rattanakosin period (1782 – 1932), although earlier influences of the Ayutthaya style are perceptible in the treatment of faces and ornaments. These statues are often placed at the entrance to temples or on family altars in Thailand. They symbolize spiritual protection and perpetual offering to Buddha. They are often depicted in pairs, in postures of respect and prayer, and protect temples and shrines. Their richly decorated attire with stylized leggings and decorations is typical of secondary deities in Thai art.
