Charming pair of male portraits, painted in oil on wood panel, by the hand or in the style of C.W.E. DIETRICH, painter of the German school (Weimar, 1712 - Dresden, 1774), who made a specialty of these small portraits of character, with a predilection for the figure of the elderly and bearded man, who summons the iconographic topos of the prophet, the rabbi, the wise man, or even the philosopher.
Please note that these panels are not attributed; having had some of the artist's works in my hands, the style and the finesse of execution make me say that they are indeed by the hand of the painter of Dresden, but this feeling is not worth expertise and I leave it to future buyers to determine it.
Even without a signature, it is clear that these two panels are quite successful, the chiaroscuro, the details of the skin tone and beards, the psychological proximity of the characters being particularly convincing.
We note some scratches, rubbing, lack of pictorial material, which the photos attest to at best.
