This is an amusing group portrait, depicting three ecclesiastics in profile, in a somewhat caricatured vein, which takes on the appearance of a character study. It is probably a fragment of a larger composition, which gives the composition an almost photographic framing, in a very close-up and altogether unusual take for this kind of subject.
The artist paid particular attention to the representation of the liturgical vestments. Particularly successful, we note the moiré effects of the fabric worn by the character in the foreground, and, in contrast, the more rustic texture of the linen or cotton worn by the prelate on the right.
The canvas is mounted on canvas. We note cracks, old and sometimes unsightly restorations, losses to the pictorial layer, detachments at the periphery... The canvas must be re-stretched and reinforced on its frame. We invite you to look carefully at the photographs that document them as best as possible. You will need to plan for a restoration, or hang it as is, which can be a very nice choice in a somewhat rustic environment, for example a country house.
In any case, a fun, rare, and well-treated subject, in a fairly substantial format.
