The sea is green and very rough. Clouds race across the sky. The entire crew is busy on the deck of the ship, while many people watch them from the jetty, where a white lighthouse stands. In the background, the houses of the town are depicted with great detail.
The scene is depicted with great finesse and realism. The range of colors is wide and complex, both to represent the natural elements and the boats, buildings and people. The whole is bright.
The work is signed "C. Kuwasseg fils" and dated (66) at the bottom right. It is located on the back, on an old label placed on the frame.
The work is clean, in very good condition. The back shows 3 minor restorations. It is offered here in a classic 19th century frame in wood and stucco, also in very good condition (some minor gilding touch-ups).
The artist
Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg is the son of the Austrian painter Karl Joseph Kuwasseg, with whom he took his first steps as an artist. He was born in Draveil (20 km south of Paris) in 1833 and quickly turned to painting, which he would abandon for a time to become a sailor. Returning to painting, he specialized in seascapes, ports of Brittany, Normandy and the North Sea. He also willingly painted landscapes and Alpine villages.
From 1855, Charles Kuwasseg exhibited at the Salon in Paris. He would receive numerous awards there. He later became an art professor.
Some of Charles Kuwasseg's works, oils on canvas or panels, are notably preserved at the Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen, the Museum of Fine Arts in Rennes, in Fécamp at the Musée des Pêcheries, as well as at the Maltwood Art Museum of the University of Victoria (Canada).
The work we are offering here has obvious links with the one kept at the Fisheries Museum in Fécamp.
Charles Kuwasseg's works have been sold to the public on many occasions and are highly appreciated by collectors.
Work visible at the gallery (07240).
