"Vertumnus And Pomona, Workshop Of Pierre Gobert Around 1700"
Vertumne and Pomona, oil on canvas dimensions 55 cm x 44 cm, with its beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame 75 cm x 64 cm, workshop of Pierre Gobert around 1700. The fruit nymph Pomona is so beautiful that all the rural gods are in love with her, but she disdains them. She remains indifferent to them, preferring to ignore the love of these gods to devote herself only to her garden. The God of gardens Vertumne, madly in love with her, resorts to disguises using his powers to approach her. He comes to her first as a grape harvester, then as a guardian of a vineyard, fisherman and soldier, each time praising the merits of the god Vertumne, but in vain. In a last attempt, he comes to her in the guise of an old woman, describing the virtues of marriage and the dangers that exist in rejecting love. This final attempt fails. Finally, Vertumnus decides to appear in his true face. Pomona then gives in to his advances and she falls in love with him. Subject represented by many artists shows the very striking contrast between an old woman who represents wisdom and this very beautiful young woman who has all the assets to seduce
