"A student of Jacques-Louis David, he did not begin to practice until about ten years after leaving the master's studio. It was, in 1818, the Fualdès affair that gave him the opportunity to practice his gifts. Originally from Albi, he drew the accused in this famous legal affair in Rodez or in his hometown. Coming to Paris, from 1826, he made several applications for a lithographic printer's patent; he did not obtain it until 1831. In the meantime, he continued to work for the French Pantheon, a collection of portraits of famous people..., a set of 20 deliveries of 4 portraits published between 1823 and 1827. The copy, by lithography, of old paintings (Raphael, Michelangelo...) or contemporary paintings (Ingres) became his specialty. His lithographs, which he exhibited regularly at the Salons des Beaux-Arts in Paris and Toulouse, earned him several awards. At the Salon des Produits des Beaux-Arts et de l'Industrie in Toulouse, where his Odalisques had already earned him a bronze medal in 1827, he received a gold medal in 1840 for two lithographs copied after Ingres, including the famous Roger et Angélique [archive]. Southerner like Ingres, he was his assiduous lithographer.
