Object description :

"Dresden, Germany After Derby Figurines Shepherd And Shepherdess, 19th Century."
Antique pair of porcelain figurines, beautifully crafted copies after Derby, made by the Dresden company in the mid-19th century. The set features a shepherd and shepherdess dressed in decorated 18th-century attire, seated on ornate scroll-based pedestals with a small bocage. The man plays a set of bagpipes, with a dog at his feet, while the woman plays a mandolin, accompanied by a lamb, emphasizing the pastoral nature of the scene. On the base, there is a very rare mark - a mirror letter B under a crown - mentioned in the book “Marks and Monograms on Pottery and Porcelain” by William Chaffers, a renowned researcher of antique porcelain. He notes that he has encountered this mark, but it is exceedingly rare and remains unidentified. Most likely, it was used by a small group of talented designers from Dresden who specialized in high-quality reproductions of early Derby pieces. Originals figures are referenced in book “Derby Porcelain 1748-1848” by J. Twitchett, cataloged as pattern No. 126. It should be noted that these copies exhibit remarkable craftsmanship, meticulous coloring and careful attention to details. In the mid-19th century, a period when "everyone copied everyone else," such reproductions were especially popular, particularly those depicting biblical themes, shepherds, gardeners, and children. The exceptional detail and skillful execution of these figurines make them highly collectible and valuable pieces in the world of antique porcelain.
