Period: Roman Empire, 2nd - 3rd century Origin: Eastern Mediterranean – Probably Egypt Provenance: Private collection by inheritance - Limousin, France Small balsamarium with a globular body, delicately blown in a glass with a discreet iridescence. Used in Antiquity to preserve perfumed oils, balms and ointments, this type of container was an essential element of Roman care rituals and funerary practices. Its small size and elegant silhouette testify to the refinement of Roman glassmaking, the art of production of which was perfected in the workshops of the Eastern Mediterranean. Description • Material: Blown glass with old patina and slight iridescence • Shape: Globular body with slender neck and flared opening • Iridescence: Subtle, revealing delicate reflections formed by time Use & Symbolism Roman balsamaries often accompanied the deceased in the tombs, serving as offerings during funeral rites. Objects of everyday life and spirituality, they bear witness to the link between the art of glass and ancient beliefs. State of conservation • Presence of a visible crack, but in no way altering its charm or solidity. • Traces of use and homogeneous patina, typical of authentic antique pieces. • Presented on a modern base, offering an ideal enhancement.
