Mid-17th century France Provenance: Private collection of a sister of the Monastery of the Visitation in Paray-le-Monial A lid with heraldic decoration of chivalry inspiration This remarkable engraved and openwork brass warming basin lid, dating from the 17th century, has a rich heraldic decoration, centered on a fleur-de-lis coat of arms surmounted by a knight's helmet with lambrequins. Warming basins, used between the 16th and 18th centuries, were used to warm bed linen using a brazier placed inside. The lids, often richly decorated, were not only utilitarian, but also reflected the social status of their owner, through heraldic and symbolic motifs. Description & Symbolism • Central coat of arms: Adorned with fleurs-de-lys, a symbol associated with the French monarchy and certain great noble families. • Knight's helmet: Placed above the shield, it evokes the military and aristocratic heritage. • Engraved lambrequins: Decorative motifs inspired by tournament ornaments, emphasizing a prestigious appearance. • Circular openwork: Typical of the warming basins of this period, they promoted the diffusion of heat while enriching the aesthetics of the object.
