Barbe, Lyon, 1945 Produced in wartime and made with cheap materials, this copy is well preserved: slightly yellowed paper but the colors of the illustrations are bright; small scratches on the cover (visible in photo) Period: mid-20th century Dimensions: gouache 28.5 x 22 cm, album 32.3 x 27 cm STETTEN-BERNARD Jean (1913-2008): French cartoonist and famous resistance fighter during the Second World War, Jean Maurice José Stetten used his mother's maiden name, Jean Bernard. He illustrated many book covers, notably as artistic director of the Le Masque collection (210 covers). He published his only work for children in 1945 with J. Barbe in Lyon, his city, and used the pseudonym Maurice Lorrain (probably in reference to the Cross of Lorraine).
