Fristup was one of the 19th-century Danish painters who fell in love with Italy, making it one of his favorite subjects. Two years after this painting, he married his second wife, who was from Assisi. Fristup was the director of the design school at the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts. Fristup painted this view in 1877, two years after the start of the eruption of Vesuvius. This sequence of volcanic activity lasted until 1906.
