Object description :

"Large 17th Century Ebony Cabinet. "
Large ebony and blackened wood cabinet from the 17th century - The upper body: The upper cornice with guilloche molding receives modillions interspersed with flat strips. It is placed on a support of fir and poplar wood. The sides are veneered with ebony wood engraved with flowers, and compartmentalized by wavy moldings. It opens in the upper part with two large drawers veneered and carved with ebony wood of characters and centaurs. The two large front doors are veneered externally and internally with ebony wood. The facades, with veneers engraved with flowers, angels and putti, are interspersed with guilloche moldings. The projecting panels, octagonal in shape, are carved in ebony and represent the abduction of the Sabine women. The interiors of the doors are veneered with ebony wood. They are engraved with flowers interspersed with guilloche moldings. When open, the piece of furniture has twelve large drawers veneered and engraved with flowers in frames of guilloche moldings. The two central doors are veneered and engraved, on the front, with characters from the Comedia del arte. The interior, called theater or tabernacle, is veneered with marquetry with geometric decoration, pyramid, triangle, star, made from the following materials: green-tinted bone, violet wood, amaranth wood, satinwood, hornbeam wood (fillets), and ebony. It opens, in the upper part, with two drawers with double bottoms, a drawer with a mirror bottom and turned balusters. Two columns on partitions reveal six small drawers by sliding. The upper part rests on a molded base opening with two drawers with an engraved front. It is supported by a paneled background with protruding, guilloche moldings. The panels are interspersed with half columns. The facade has 6 twisted columns with a smooth and engraved shaft. The whole is joined by a blackened wooden panel supported by small ball feet. This piece of furniture, from the middle of the 17th century, was restored during the last quarter of the 18th century. Later base with the exception of the 6 facade columns which have been preserved. Later drawer joinery. Some of the grooves have been changed. This work, produced in Paris, is very interesting. The use, almost entirely for all the original parts, of carved and engraved ebony makes it a very high quality piece of furniture. Worldwide delivery on estimate.
