"Box Of Holy Oils Sacred Church Ampoule Tin 17th Century Period"
Equipped with a single ampoule, this pewter box was used to contain the holy chrism, the chrism oil which was intended for anointing and used on the occasion of sacraments. The ampoule in fact bears the Latin annotation "crisma". With a relatively refined parallelipiped shape, the box has a simple crest on the lid and would seem to date from the 17th century. Under the box, the annotation of the date 1793 would perhaps suggest that the box was stolen from a church during the Revolutionary era?
