Imposing element in Gilded Wood from the end of the 17th early 18th century.
It is composed of an accumulation of acanthus leaves in very high relief converging towards a man's face which itself seems to emerge from acanthus leaves.
The whole is spectacular and of very good quality, carved from a single block of lime.
A beautiful monoxyl sculpture which originally must have belonged to a much larger set:
an altarpiece, an enormous frame!!
The appearance is southern perhaps Italian and the quality of the sculpture of the face recalls certain faces from the comedia del arte etc...
The gilding is still in good condition and reveals the red of Armenians in places.
Be careful, this gilded wood is really large:
86 cm high by 31 cm wide and approximately 11 cm deep.
it can stand up straight by itself although the ideal would be to fix it.
it is much more beautiful and much more spectacular in reality. it is hard to imagine the work that such an element in gilded wood entirely carved by hand can represent!
a beautiful element in carved and gilded wood very decorative, with a real presence.
