Object description :

"Curved Blade Knife – Silver Handle Oriental Goldwork – 18th Century Cutlery"
Curved Blade Knife – Oriental Goldsmithing, 18th Century

Superb antique curved blade knife, dating from the 18th century, featuring a finely chiseled silver handle. The richly detailed plant decoration, composed of flowers and fruits, seems to emerge from an elephant's head sculpted at the base of the handle, near the axis of rotation of the blade. This axis is decorated with a stylized daisy, adding an additional touch of finesse to the whole.

The end of the handle is decorated with a mythological animal resembling a heraldic lion, holding a coat of arms. In heraldry, the lion is an emblematic figure representing courage, nobility, royalty and strength. Considered the "king of animals", it symbolizes power and authority, while evoking a strong Judeo-Christian symbolism.

The blade can be adjusted thanks to an openwork silver ring, also stylized. The silver handle is hallmarked on the edge of each side of the blade (see photos).

Condition: Good general condition, with slight oxidation of the blade.

Dimensions:

Length open: 18.4 cm
Length closed: 13.5 cm
Blade width: 2.4 cm

A very beautiful collector's item from the 18th century, a testament to the refinement and know-how of oriental goldsmithing.
