"Flemish School (mannerist) Of The 16th Century Around 1590. The Derision Of Christ "
Oil on copper Presented in a superb period frame, in blackened fruitwood with reversed profile and guilloche patterns. Total dimensions: 47 x 42 cm. Copper alone: 23 x 18 cm The painter chose this episode of the passion, during which Jesus is attacked, mocked and ridiculed in front of the crowd, an episode that is found twice in the Gospels. In our painting, the subject is reduced to two characters; We see first Christ seated, a white sheet covers part of his body. In front of him, a grimacing, unsympathetic and richly dressed man; hands him a reed, to act as a scepter, on his head is placed a crown – of thorns – Since he was accused of presenting himself as the “king of the Jews”, they disguised him as a king… Our painting (of very good quality) was probably painted by the workshop of Gillis Mostaert (1534-1598) This Dutch painter, born in 1534 in Hulst, Netherlands, died in 1598 in Antwerp, Belgium. Gillis Mostaert, was mainly active during the Flemish Renaissance period in the 16th century and his artistic style is Mannerism.
