Contrary to the name that we see written in each gallery and near each auction room, Vicens' first name was Guillaume and not Gaston… Where does the error come from, good question…
The catalogues of the Salon de l'Atelier in Bordeaux clearly mention his first name and his training with Cabié, which he often prides himself on on the stretcher of his canvases. He exhibited landscapes of the southwest but also of Spain in Bordeaux, mainly made after the war.
Our canvas is part of a series made in Beynac, on the banks of the Dordogne. This one is a view taken at the top of the village from the side of the entrance to the fortress, a little-known viewpoint.
