"12th Century - Meuse - Bone - Poupèe De Chasse Depicting Religious Figure"
Extraordinary carved bone plaque. Meuse, 12th century, probably depicting a praying monk. The plaque, a poupée de chasse part of a cassina or a panel decorated with characters, presents typical Romanesque features, such as large expressive hands and facial features that are not expressive but strongly typical. The carving is splendid and has remained in excellent condition: the cleaning was carried out delicately and without ruining the surface, thus allowing it to remain in excellent condition. On the back, you can see how the bone, which is extremely dated, has been reinforced with a limestone-based preparation (plaster and glue?). The 3 holes secured the plaque to the support with nails.
