"Important 17th Century Sculpture Representing The XIV Child In The Form Of An Angel."
Important 17th century sculpture representing Louis XIV as a child in the guise of an angel. The lower part, the most important, in walnut, represents a Medici vase decorated with gaudrons from which emerge garlands of foliage, flowers and fruits that frame the face of the child L XIV, winged. This part, flat at the back, 45 cm thick, was therefore carved, in one piece, in a centuries-old walnut tree whose trunk could not have been less than a meter in diameter. This one is surmounted by a form of flat cornice, in oak, decorated with flowers. This sculpture comes from the bishopric of Versailles. It was used, very probably, as decoration for a pulpit. The base, in painted and patinated wood, dates from the 20th century.
