Object description :

"Claude Joseph Vernet (follower Of) Night: A Port Under The Light Of The Moon. 19th Century Oil"
Night, a seaport in the moonlight (Follower of Claude-Joseph VERNET) This beautiful painting is a remake of an original painting by Claude-Joseph VERNET, dated 1771 and presented at the Salon of 1773. It is part of a series of four paintings representing the four parts of the day, commissioned by the Countess du BARRY for the Louveciennes pavilion. During the Revolution, the painting was seized from the Cabinet of Paintings of the Count of ARTOIS, and it then joined the Louvre Museum. Our copy, of more reasonable dimensions, must date back to the early years of the 19th century and must have been made by a skilled copyist in the Painting Galleries of the Louvre. Old frame with keys, in stuccoed and gilded wood with swan decoration in the spandrels.
