"Lezardrieux Paimpol By Charles Hall Thorndike (1875-1935)"
Spectacular work by the American artist Charles Hall THORNDIKE (1875-1935). This is an Oil on canvas signed lower left and measuring 54 x 65 cm (66 x 77 cm with its frame). The painting has just been carefully cleaned by my restorer and is therefore in perfect condition. There are two small old pieces on the back and the remains of an old exhibition label on the stretcher. Charles Hall THORNDIKE (1875-1935) is an American artist from the Boston area. He was a student of Jean-Paul LAURENS in Paris and frequented the painters of the Montparnasse district. He married Henriette, originally from Bréhat, who was his model. They owned a house overlooking the Trieux estuary, where they brought MATISSE, ROUAULT, SIGNAC, LUCE, ... His wife had gone to the same school in Paimpol as Marcel CACHIN, whose son Charles married Ginette SIGNAC, daughter of Paul SIGNAC, as his first wife. Charles THORNDIKE owned many works by his artist friends; he divided his time between Paris, Nice and Kermouster. In Nice, it was Henri MATISSE who kept his art collection in his safe at the Bank of France during the Second World War and who took care of their unoccupied villa. A member of the Paris American Art Association, he exhibited in the annual Parisian Salons, notably at the Tuileries. Free delivery in Paris possible.
