17th century Bolognese frame characterized by curled and protruding plant elements. Oval internal shape with an order of recurring leaves and ribbons at the centers on the frame, followed by large golden leaves in gouache always on red bole, carved with great mastery and marked plasticity.
The cartoccio workmanship was very widespread in the Baroque period, and Bologna was an important center at European level, also due to the golden age of Bolognese painting in the seventeenth century. The frame in question bears witness to the extraordinary craftsmanship and bold design of the cartoccio shapes.
