"The Greek Chapel in Ajaccio, Corsica"
Watercolor and gouache on thick paper,
Unsigned,
Beautiful, finely crafted watercolor work attributed to the Corsican painter Lucien Péri which depicts a view of the Greek Chapel near Ajaccio in Corsica. The artist has skillfully captured the different shades of color of the vegetation on a summer's day.
Lucien Peri made his first submission to the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts in 1910. After 1920, he distinguished himself each year at the exhibitions of this society and in 1935 won the Salon's gold medal with The Washerwomen of Porticcio. Peri painted the most famous places, as well as the most isolated and natural places in Corsica. Lucien Peri's painting was disseminated through various means: lithographs, chromos photographs and posters for the PLM company (Paris Lyon Méditerranée). The artist also illustrated books: La Corse by Raoul Blanchard, in 1926 and Corse by Lorenzi de Bradi, in 1936. His watercolors and paintings can be found in magazines such as L'Illustration or La Corse touristique.
A landscape painter, adept at working in the field, Lucien Peri makes drawings in pencil and grease pencil, sometimes in charcoal or watercolor. These works are then taken up in the studio to develop works according to the desired format. Lucien Peri stands out for his technique, he easily moves from the lightness of color and manner in his watercolors to darker and more impasto touches for his oils although they were often very small. However, all his works are characterized by an unfinished appearance and great speed of execution. The journalist Martin Baretti also writes that Peri was "an incomparable landscaper whose art is situated under the reign of speed". (Palais Fesch, Ajaccio)
We can compare our work by its subject and its technique to the works of the painter Lucien Peri.
His works are present in the Cultural Media Library of Corsica and the Corsicans and at the Fesch Museum.
Dimensions: 28 x 49 cm on sight and 44 x 64 cm with its black wooden frame.
Our work can form a pendant with the watercolor "The Calanques of Piana, Corsica" in the same frame currently for sale.
