Pair of Antique Meissen Porcelain Figural Double Salt Cellars – Early 19th Century

This exquisite and highly collectible pair of antique Meissen porcelain figural salt cellars dates to the early 19th century. Crafted in the Rococo style, the pieces depict a boy and a young woman seated between two large wicker baskets, each holding a bouquet of flowers. The baskets are delicately hand-painted with floral sprigs and rest on oval, rocaille-moulded bases edged in gilt.

Both pieces bear the iconic underglaze blue crossed swords mark of Meissen, alongside an incised model number ‘3024’ on the underside.

These figures were originally modeled by Johann Kändler, Meissen’s chief modeler in the 18th century, celebrated for his masterful Rococo-style figurines known for their remarkable detail and lifelike expression. Due to the enduring popularity of Kändler’s designs, Meissen continued producing these figurines well into the 19th century, preserving the exceptional craftsmanship of the originals.

Historical Background

Founded in 1710 in Meissen, Saxony, Germany, Meissen is one of the most prestigious porcelain manufacturers in the world. It was the first European company to produce hard-paste porcelain, breaking the centuries-old monopoly of China and Japan.

Meissen is celebrated for its finely crafted figurines, elaborate Rococo designs, and the iconic crossed swords mark, which has been in continuous use since the early 18th century. Today, Meissen porcelain remains highly collectible, valued for its craftsmanship, historical significance, and artistic detail, making it sought after by collectors and auction houses worldwide.
