"Edouard Debourg (1880-1939) Still Life With Bouquet, Books. Gargilesse, Crozant, Osterlind Rue"
Large and beautiful watercolor by Edouard Debourg representing a still life with a bouquet of flowers and books in front of a window, painted in the painter's studio at La Billardière, signed lower left. watercolor format on view without frame 63x50cm and 77x63cm including frame. This is therefore a new work by Edouard Debourg, this time a still life, he uses watercolor that he treats as usual with great mastery, slightly cubist, the drawing is sure and powerful and its coloring very subtle. It comes from the artist's descendants, like all the other works by Debourg that I offer. A work therefore very recognizable by one of the emblematic painters of the Crozant school and even more precisely of the Gargilesse group of which he was a part with his friends Anders Osterlind, Marcel Coucy, André Villeboeuf and Claude Chéreau. His work is also very often compared with that of his friends Anders Osterlind and Marcel Coucy. Edouard Bourgeois, known as Debourg, was born in Versailles in 1880 and died in Gargilesse in 1939. He began by attending the Beaux Arts courses in Paris, where he met Emile Othon Friesz, with whom he became friends, who later led him to meet other painters who frequented the Creuse Valley, such as Detroy, Osterlind and Guillaumin. In 1900 he took part in the Universal Exhibition in Paris, in 1913 he exhibited at the Salons d'Automne and the Artistes Français, and this until 1938. In 1917, during a trip to Gargilesse and the Creuse Valley, he met the Osterlind clan, with whom he became friends; a few years later, they even became members of the same family through their respective wives. In 1920 he bought a house in La Billardière near Gargilesse where he stayed until the end of his life. From there he rubbed shoulders with all his artist friends mentioned above. In 1921 he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and continued to do so until 1938. He worked in Brussels and exhibited with Anders Osterlind at the Manteau gallery. From 1923 he discovered Corrèze where he painted many paintings and drawings, especially in the area around Uzerche, Argentat, Collonges and Beaulieu. He spent the winter of 1924 in Brittany near Concerneau and decided to go and meet the painters of Pont-Aven and the Académie Ranson. In 1925 he exhibited a lot, especially in Paris, galleries Druet, Granoff, Chappe, etc... In 1931 he exhibited with his friends Belle, Coucy, Detroy, Villeboeuf, Jamet, Joseph, Othon-Friesz... in the hall of the Excelsior on the Champs Elysées for the exhibition "The painters of the Creuse valley". Between 1934 and 1936 he participated in the decoration of the ceiling of the Rex cinema. In 1937 he opened a studio on rue des Sablons in Paris and in 1939 he died in Gargilesse. There will be many posthumous exhibitions, notably in Orléans and Limoges, and several sales of part of his studio in Orléans. Today he is one of the 10 best painters of the Crozant school.
