This painting from the end of the 19th century is in the style of a work by Ary Scheffer (1795 - 1858), a French painter of Dutch origin, very well known during the Romantic period. This painting represents "The Giaour", a contemptuous term given by the Turks to infidels. This painting was inspired by the poem "The Giaour" by Lord George Gordon Byron, which relates the regrets expressed by the soldier who became a monk on the dramatic consequences of his love for Leila, the slave of a rich Muslim who kills the latter to punish her for having deceived him. This painting is part of the "Vanity" genre with a very symbolic allegorical representation of the passing of time and death. We note the presence of the skull of the hourglass, and the portrait of the beloved woman, and the role played by the soldier monk by the helmet and the sword.
