"Baoulé Kplé Kplé Moon Mask - Ivory Coast"
Coming from an old German collection in the 1950s, this Baoulé Kplé kplé moon mask is distinguished by its face surrounded by a crenellated border, its protruding eyes and its rectangular mouth revealing regular teeth. Small ears adorn its horns, reflecting a posture of warning. The harmony of the black and red hues reinforces the expressive intensity of the object.
The Kplé kplé ‘lunar’ mask is a modern representation of the widespread Goli festival masks. It is an allegory of the sun buffalo, an animal dedicated to the great cosmic divinity Niamé.
