Charles-Emile-Auguste Durand known as Carolus-Duran (1837-1917) was a student at the Swiss Academy in Paris. He left for Italy in 1862 to copy the Old Masters. He was a friend of Edouard Manet (1832-1883). Zola said of him "he has a lot of skill, an artificial brilliance, a lying, flashy and deliberate originality". Carolus-Duran and virtuoso in painting notables and he is inundated with orders because of his worldly recognition. Many national and international museums preserve his works.
