18th Century Bronze Weight.
18th century weight. Bronze.
Incomplete bronze weight, with the container and two smaller ones, all cold decorated with incised and stamped designs, with simple rims on the smaller containers and more complex rims on the container. Nested cup-shaped weights are a set of cup-shaped weights that fit precisely into each other. A complete set is one that retains all of its original cups. The largest, called a keeper, consists of a top lid with a handle and a closure, and weighs exactly the same as the sum of all the others. The second, in descending order, weighs half the weight of the keeper and the same as the sum of the others. This proportionality is maintained until the last weight, called a disk or last piece, which is usually solid and closes the set. This principle remained unchanged until the introduction of the decimal metric system. -
